NEWS: Shopify Purchases 3,250 Tonnes of Carbon Removal Credits from MASH Makes

Leading e-commerce platform Shopify is partnering with MASHMakes to address its carbon footprint by purchasing 3,250 tonnes of carbon dioxide removal(CDR) credits.

Carbon removal credits represent verified actions to durably remove CO2 from the atmosphere, a crucial step in mitigating climate change. At MASH Makes, these credits are created using thermochemical technology, which transforms agricultural waste into biochar, a carbon-rich material that locks away CO2 for centuries.

In addition to carbon removal, MASH Makes’ biochar offers significant co-benefits, including improving soil health, increasing crop yields, and acting as a sustainable soil conditioner for at least four growing seasons.

“Partnering with MASH Makes is another key step on Shopify’s journey to reverse climate change. They’re a company we’re excited about because of the replicability of their biochar technology, and the potential for co-product revenue from the sale of biofuels,” says Mitch Selby, Sustainability Fund Lead at Shopify.

What’s different about MASH Makes carbon removal

Unlike traditional carbon offsets, which focus on avoiding emissions, MASH Makes’ carbon removal credits are centred on durable CO2 removal. Using advanced thermochemical technology, atmospheric carbon is captured and locked into biochar, a stable material that does not decompose like organic matter. This ensures the CO2 is durably removed from the carbon cycle for hundreds of years.

MASH Makes’ carbon removal credits meet the highest standards for additionality, permanence, and verifiability, aligning with Shopify’s rigorous criteria for high-quality carbon removal projects. Beyond environmental benefits, MASH Makes’ operations create economic and social value in the regions where we work—primarily in the Global South.

“Our collaboration with Shopify shows that carbon removal is increasingly recognised as a key component in tackling climate change,” says MASH Makes CEO Jakob Bejbro Andersen. “Shopify’s purchase of     MASH Makes’ biochar-based CDR credits demonstrates their leadership and forward-thinking commitment to sustainability.”
