MASH Makes sets new standards in 2024

In 2024,  MASH Makes moved from scaling innovation to delivering real-world impact on a global scale. Our biochar and biofuel production site has been running at full capacity, our research and development team is delivering remarkable results, we’ve achieved certifications from the European Biochar Certificate (EBC) and ISCC EU, and we’re meeting the expectations of carbon credit markets.

Looking ahead to 2025, we are eager to expand our biofuel’s commercial use, compete as a Top 20 finalist in the XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition, and continue empowering Indian farmers by selling biochar as a valuable agricultural commodity.

But first, let’s take a closer look at what we achieved in 2024…

Advancing agricultural solutions with biochar

In 2024, our  research team conducted dozens of trials, demonstrating biochar's potential to revolutionise sustainable agriculture. Trials conducted in Maharashtra showed substantial yield increases across various crops when applied at optimal rates.

A four-season study also revealed cumulative benefits, with the fourth season alone delivering a 56% yield increase. When combined with fertilisers, biochar enhanced nitrogen use efficiency by 42% and, in a lab study, boosted microbial activity by 195%. These results position biochar as a transformative tool for both agriculture and carbon sequestration. Currently, our biochar is being used by local farmers in India, who report outstanding benefits for their crops.

Driving innovation with biofuel

In 2024, MASH Makes also continued to act as a leader in waste-based biofuel technology. Our biofuel, derived from agricultural waste, demonstrated its versatility and reliability in several successful tests. Early in the year, engine trials conducted with independent research and service provider FVTR validated its compatibility with single-cylinder engines.

Our biofuel also earned ISCC EU certification, confirming its compliance with international sustainability standards. These developments underscore the viability of MASH Makes biofuel as a cleaner, scalable, and commercially viable alternative to fossil fuels.

Carbon removal achievements and certifications

In 2024, we also reached significant milestones in our carbon removal efforts.

By mid-December, we had permanently removed 3,500 tons of CO2e from the atmosphere and delivered carbon removal certificates to companies like Microsoft and The Economist Group through our partnerships with Supercritical and Carbonfuture

Our efforts gained global recognition when MASH Makes advanced to the Top 20 finalists in the prestigious XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition. The XPRIZE team visited our production facility in October to validate compliance, and we will soon submit our final application. Winners are expected to be announced in Spring 2025.

Additionally, our biochar products received the European Biochar Certificate (EBC) in the AgroOrganic certification class and the EBC C-Sink Certificate, validating their environmental benefits and contributions to carbon sequestration.

Scaling production and strengthening operations

2024 was also a year of operational growth and resilience at MASH Makes.

Our first production site in Karnataka, India, showed that it could operate at 125% of its design capacity, exceeding expectations and showcasing the efficiency of our processes. In December, we broke ground on an adjacent production site. These two sites have the potential to produce 7,000 tonnes of biofuel and 14,000 tonnes of biochar annually.

This performance was bolstered by €2 million project financing from NEFCO, enabling the construction the second pyrolysis facility to meet growing demand. As a founding member of the Green Fuels Alliance India, we also joined forces with industry leaders to accelerate the adoption of sustainable energy solutions. These collaborations, combined with our operational successes, have laid a strong foundation for continued growth in 2025.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As 2024 concludes, we are excited about the road ahead. In 2025, we aim to quadruple production over three new sites, expand the commercial use of our biofuel, compete on the global stage in the XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition, and deepen our impact on Indian agriculture through biochar adoption.

The achievements of 2024 have set a strong foundation for what’s to come. To our team, partners, and supporters—thank you for making this year extraordinary. Together, we are building a brighter, greener future.

Here’s to an impactful 2025!
